When to Communicate in Person

Have you ever taken offense at an e-mail, even if its message wasn’t offensive? How about on a conference call?

When we can’t read peoples’ body language, our limbic (emotional) brain fills in details we miss. Those details may be flat-out wrong. We may end up reacting to a different message to the one sent!

The following chart may help you decide when to meet in person.

In Person: Not Necessary
if the message is:

  • Simple
  • Information
  • Data

Probably Best In Person
if the message is:

  • Complex
  • Conversational
  • Emotional
